12V Battery Protection - Powercell 8 Review & Installation
Your car’s 12V accessory battery can get drained if you have an accessory like a dashcam that runs 24/7, and it can eventually cause your 12V battery to fail permanently. Fortunately, there is a solution to protect your 12V battery, the Blackboxmycar Powercell 8 Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery pack, with Bluetooth. If you want to see the product and its details, how it can be installed, and find out how much it costs, then this video is for you. I hope you like it.
CRITICAL INFO - UPDATE 2023-06-18 :
- (A) I repeat a mistake in the Viofo T130 specs, saying it is a 4K camera, but that is an error, it is actually a 2K front camera. Sorry about the confusion.
- (B) The Blackboxmycar Web page for the Powercell 8 has a note hidden at the bottom of the specs and is kind of critical. I wish I had known before making the video because I would have put far more emphasis on it...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changing Passwords
If you are planning on changing the battery password, you will need to enter the default password '1234' when prompted for the old password.
Note: There is no password retrieval or reset function. Password reset is a function that can only be performed by technicians at the manufacturer. The Reset function within the Battery Manager App is for resetting the default battery settings (ie. the Dual Charger setting) only and will not reset the password back to the default "1234".
Because of this, we strongly recommend that you don't change the password unless you absolutely needed to, and if you do change it, make sure to keep a record of the new password. Once you have changed the password, you will be asked to re-enter it every time you access the Settings menu within the Battery Manager App.

    This isn’t a hidden feature but more of a tip. We have a 2023 EV6 GT-Line 2 and we were shocked how gutless and tinny the audio system sounds. This is a common gripe. I commute weekly from Vancouver Island to Vancouver and I like my music. An easy fix is a small rumbler that fits under the trunk floor - but it doesn’t add a lot of sound quality, just a rumble and doesn’t help the system holistically. On the other end of the spectrum, if one has the resources, you can add a custom fibreglass-moulded sub enclosure and subwoofer where the existing one is. But $$$. A more mid-range (no pun intended) choice is something like a JL Audio 8-12” enclosed subwoofer (NB: I opted for the 10”) which I had professionally installed along with a bass knob hidden under the steering wheel around my right knee. I cannot express how MASSIVE a difference this makes - and I hope they fix this in the upcoming refresh. Even with the bass turned all the way down, it’s still on a little bit - and what that does is fill in the missing frequencies and makes all of the other frequencies sound brighter and fuller. Turn it up halfway and it really bumps without sounding like I’m trying recapture my misspent youth! The enclosed sub does not have to be hard mounted into the trunk - it just sits on the floor and the heft of it means it won’t really move on its own. It has a minimal footprint (I have it up on its end, which also positions it in the most beneficial ‘rear-firing’ configuration) and is easily unplugged and removed if I need that extra space. PROTIP: I happened to have a set of WeatherTech 81BS1 8CTK1 CargoTech Cargo Containment System from our old 2020 Kia Niro - which holds it in place perfectly!

      Excellent information, thank you. I ended up configuring the sound settings to maximize bass, increase mids, decreased the highs, shifted the sound 1 position backwards, and tuned the Meridian junk that is in there to what my ears liked. It isn't the best, but much better than the stock settings and avoided me spending more money on "accessories" ;-) Thanks again.

I do find the EV6 reflector headlights quite poor compared to the Niro EV projectors, hopefully the 2025 EV6 has much improved headlights!

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution Місяць тому

      Hi Bob. You are right with your list of improvements for the facelift EV6, but I won't be changing cars for now even though the improvements are very attractive. Being in Canada the availability will be poor due to high demand, and due to high demand the interest rates will be very high compared to what I got in March 2022. I still love my EV6 and I am in no rush to change, not until an EV hits me like the EV6 did in 2021.

    • @bobstevenson4396

      I believe we will make the move to a 2025 GT-line pack 2 even though my wife’s 2023 GT-line pack 1 only has 25,000 kms on the Odo. I mostly do not care for the headlights at night on the EV6 compared to my daughter’s 2019 Niro SX Touring which is still a great car. I am also concerned that if we see a change in Government both federal and provincial here in BC we could lose our rebates which could make future upgrades more costly. Currently the demand for EV6’s appears to be dropping off as the EV9 appears to have taken over that coveted position in the market. The EV3 may be the next hot Kia EV!

    Can I ask for some information on this engine. Looking to see if the cooling fan runs continuously when the ignition is on or the motor is running? Also does the cooling system get warm like a conventional engine

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution Місяць тому

      Since the Niro EV is fully electric, and the electric motor does not get as hot as a gas engine, the cooling system does not come on until the components heat up enough to require it. This includes the motor, inverter, reduction gear, battery. In the winter you may never hear the cooling system come on, but you will hear the heat pump. In the summer, even when it is hot and the cooling system kicks in with the fans, it is still relatively quiet, especially as compared to a gas car. I hope this helps and sorry for the late reply.

    So either pay $350 for this power bank vs $20 to hardwire with a little DIY. $350 is more than most of the high-end Dash Cam out there.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution Місяць тому

      Hardwiring the dashcam does not protect your car's 12V battery, it only allows for parking mode to work, but lets the dashcam pull power until the 12V battery is dead. This battery pack is a buffer between the dashcam and your car's 12V battery. If the battery pack empties, your 12V battery is untouched since the Powercell8 battery pack only charges when the car is powered on.

    • @DarianDT
      @DarianDT Місяць тому

      @@EV-olution Well I've been hardwired and now using an OBD connection for at least 2 years. Still on the same 12v battery. Yes, you're correct that the power bank is a better option but the price is very steep to justify that. The power bank still needs to be hardwired to your car for a faster charging option because the cigarette plug is not fast enough to charge the power bank if you're only relying on that as the charging option. Either drive long distant commute each way or hardwire.

What I say in the video is that the Kia Niro EV is the opposite of Tesla and has too many buttons; there are certain things that are not daily use items and could have been put in the screen. I also say that I prefer a middle ground between Tesla and the Niro EV, with just the right amount of buttons for important things. OK, a new comment on an OLD video. This writer owns a 2019 Niro, and likes it muchly. Right now it and I are on a long road trip. I will take the Niro EVERY DAY for the serviceability aspect. SideBar Andre, how about a comparison of the 02nd generation Niro to the original. I am sore tempted to upgrade to the new version.

      That is a great idea and is in my list. The issue is that I have been so busy with my company that I have not had the time to make a video in almost a year. I have a product to review, sitting on my desk since early last year, and several press cars available, I just need to figure out the time issue. Thanks for watching and commenting. The Niro EV is a great car and I loved my 2019.

    Nice video. I plan to buy this and utilize the cigarette port for charging. Dumb question, how does the dash cam know to go to parking mode when I turn off the car when the battery pack is not hard wired?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution Місяць тому

      Thank you, I am glad you liked my video. The parking mode and Powecell8 battery pack both require the hardwire kit. You cannot have parking mode without the hardwire kit. FYI, you don't have to wire it to the car's 12V like I did, you can simply connect it to the fuse box in the car, with fuse taps. You can see how the camera is installed with the hardwire kit in my video about the Viofo T130.

      Sorry about that, I made a mistake in my response. If I recall correctly, the Powecell8 switches the output to the parking mode output when it detects there is no power coming into it, but since I don't use the 12V input for it I am not 100% sure.

    I have a request for two video topics. 1) Installation of a solar panel on roof of an EV6 and possible issues with soft (from what I have seen, they can add up to 12-20 miles an hour on a sunny day). 2) Review of all Supercharger programs and possible discounts you can get for fast charging.

      @EV-olution 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the suggestions, and for watching my video. Regarding your question about solar panels, this has been gone over at length and with the panels we have today, it makes no sense to use portable panels because you would need far too many to be of any real use in the real world. There are tons of articles and videos about the subject, but here is a reference that goes over the math (see link below). If you scroll half the way down the article, you get to the section called "How many solar panels will I need to charge just my EV?" and the example math they show that you would need 5.85 solar panels that generate 410W of power each to be of any real use. www.cnet.com/home/energy-and-utilities/heres-how-many-solar-panels-youll-need-to-charge-your-ev/

    Slightly off-topic, but nevertheless interesting: I see that you've installed your OBD2 dongle outside of the fuse box, which is a good idea since it would be impossible to close the fuse box lid with an installed OBD dongle. What kind of a fixture did you use to install the OBD socket as shown at 1:00:40 in your video? I'd like to replicate this in my EV6.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution 2 місяці тому

      The OBD2 port on the EV6 points downwards, and is not in the fuse box, but below it. Nothing needed, I just plugged in my adapter.

    • @TheRealArjay
      @TheRealArjay 2 місяці тому

      @@EV-olution Thanks for your reply! So your EV6 US version is different from the European version. By default, the OBD port in my EV6 GT-line is just below the fuse box, but behind the fuse box lid where the rectangular cutout is. I'll have to check if mine also has a cutout where your OBD port is - would be logical in terms of manufacturing economy.

    • @EV-olution

      I am actually Canadian, so it is a Canadian EV6, but the OBD2 port should be the same in all of North America. Although historically there are differences between Canadian and US Kia versions. Let me know what you find in yours, I am curious.

    There is a much better product for those that want/need a HARD -Wired power cord so they can use the Parking Mode of their dash cam. NO NEED TO BUY a hard wire power cord & then have the hassle of hard wiring it or paying someone several hundred dollars to hart-wire it for them. Garmin OBD Power Cord - will provide power 24/7 to any USB device. Simply plug one end of the power cord into their vehicle's OBD port & the other end into their dashcam - easy peasy. I sincerely hope you will say something about the Garmin OBD power cord alternative. I have little doubt everyone will prefer the Garmin OBD power cord in preference to any manufactures HARD-Wire power cord.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution 2 місяці тому

      As an FYI, if you install the hardwire kit it directly in the fuse box as the Viofo instructions indicate, instead of doing what I did, it is the same thing as plugging a wire into the OBD2 port. The OBD2 port is an interesting idea and will work well, but you still have to run the wire to the camera, which is the same amount of work as running a wire to the fuse box that is 2 inches away from the OBD2 port of the EV6. Also related to this, I use an OBD2 dongle to read car data with an app on my cell phone, and with a dedicated device called the EVOBD2, so using the OBD2 port to power the dashcam is not an option for me. Another thing I can see as a possible negative of the OBD power wire would be if you bring the car to the dealer for an update and the technician does not plug the OBD power wire back in when done; you may not notice that the camera is not working and be without it until you notice it. Still, it is an interesting option, but it would have to be seen if it is compatible with Viofo dachcams.

      @@EV-olution I thought about & seriously considered the Viofo 229 Pro - 3 Channel, however, I decided to stay with my Garmin 57 for all of the following. #1 - I don't like the Viofo adhesive mounting system & much prefer the Garmin Magnetic mounting system. I learned years ago the problems with suction cut mounts with my Garmin Nuvi 2597 GPS. #2. I can't call & talk to a Viofo tech support person, only email. With Garmin, I can call & talk to a real live person #3. I seriously object to being coerced into buying a Viofo SDHC card. The notion of capturing license plate #'s at night is a lot of marketing BS, in my opinion.

    Just got a set for my 2020 Audi A5 Sportback and installed them this evening. The fit was pretty tight, but very accurate. I only had to use two of the trim clips (one on either side of the rear mats at the door opening). They look very good and offer a lot more coverage than the OEM rubber mats. I have WeatherTech mats on both my 9th gen Accord and 17 Sorento, but the rear mats curl at the edges and even the front mat edges curl in a little. I'm going to try using a heat gun to re-form them. I digress....the TuxMat set seem very nicely made, fit well and look really good. They were a bit of a pain to get in, so I may not like the R&R process when cleaning. Time will tell.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution 2 місяці тому

      They are a bit of a tight fit, but well worth the effort to install them as they offer the best protection of any mat I have owned since 1987. I leave my Tuxmats in all year round and only take them out 2 to 4 times per year for a full mat wash. Regarding the Weathertech mats, I had the same issue with the hard plastic edge curling in on the sides of all of the mats. That issue coupled with the lack of full coverage of the Weathertech made me very happy to switch to Tuxmat.

    Must say a HUGE THANK YOU for this video. Because of the tips and tricks (and dead ends) you spent time discovering I managed to fit my NextBase dash cam in less than an hour. Things you discovered, like the door seal pulling away, were invaluable. Also I made sure to check my cable length before I started to to route along the floor, and luckily it was the perfect length. I also started at the front and worked backwards which made it easier for my dash cam (NextBase) as it uses an HDMI connector into the dashcam from the rear camera, versus a jack on the other side, so getting it through the grommet on the trunk door wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

    That camera is mounted in a bad spot behind the mirror. I'm pretty sure that's why you're getting the purple color inside the vehicle as the IR's are bouncing off the back of the mirror. Theres also too much glare at night with interior camera as its doing the same thing.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment, but I have since found out that the color change of the video is due to the way the hardware of the camera processes the light. It is possible to have hardware that corrects for the issue, but it is quite a bit more expensive, and the reason most dashcams with IR and night vision don't have that hardware. The camera placement does not make a difference because my last car and previous dashcam did the same thing, and the camera was far from any other object.
